Ensuring Gender Equity in the HIV Response

Ensuring Gender Equity in HIV-Related Research, Prevention, Diagnosis, Treatment, Care, and the Development of Interventions Based on a Gendered Analysis

All too often, policies are drafted and research undertaken that relate to women and girls, but for which the women and girls most affected are never consulted or are largely ignored. ATHENA therefore aims to ensure that HIV-related research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care are gender equitable, and that interventions are based on a gendered analysis. Working toward this goal, we work collaboratively with diverse partners across the globe to gather input from women and girls most affected by HIV and AIDS, disseminate this information, and advocate for the inclusion of women’s and girls’ perspectives and wants in high-level forums, such as UN consultations and National Strategic Plans to respond to HIV and AIDS.
